The government of Ontario has collaborated with Berry Plastics Canada to support the development of new technologies and jobs in Belleville, Canada.

Berry Plastics Canada manufactures packaging for the food, dairy and agricultural sectors.

Valued at around $7.8m, the project is expected to create 16 new jobs and retain 50 positions in Belleville.

Ontario Economic Development, Employment and Infrastructure Minister Brad Duguid said: "Our number-one priority is growing the economy and creating jobs.

"Our support for Berry Plastics Canada will help it invest in new technology to improve products and boost production."

Berry Plastics Canada will use $780,000 from the Eastern Ontario Development Fund to invest in new technology for speeding up production of stretch film, which is used to secure products to pallets during distribution.

The Eastern Ontario Development Fund was created to help regional businesses pursue innovation and new markets, thereby creating jobs and diversifying the economy.

Alongside the Southwestern Ontario Development Fund, it has helped to create and retain more than 41,000 jobs and attracted more than $1.8bn in investment.
