DS Smith Plastics’ Rapak is set to add a new production line for Bag-in-Box packaging at its Shumen plant.

Located in the North East of Bulgaria, the new line marks the sixth at the plant. It is expected to offer manufacturing flexibility, strengthen operational efficiencies and reduce ordering lead times for customers.

The company established the plant in 2005 to manufacture flexible bags in various sizes ranging from 0.75l to 1,400l.

Rapak Shumen plant director Ivo Pavlov said: “The Rapak team in Bulgaria is really excited about the new capabilities brought by the new production line.

“Demand for Bag-in-Box packaging in Eastern Europe is rising, and now we are fully prepared to cater to the market needs.”

The company will use the new production line to manufacture Bag-in-Box bags starting from 2l and 220l in MetPET, ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH), nylon or other materials.

According to the company, the new machine meets all safety and food hygiene standards, including good manufacturing practice (GMP), ISO 2200, and British Retail Consortium (BRC).

Earlier this month, the company introduced a Bag-in-Box packaging solution for paints and varnishes in a move to reduce the amount of contaminated packaging.

Rapak produces bags, fitments and filling machines for Bag-in-Box products serving beverages, liquid food and chemicals markets across Eastern Europe.

The company introduced an active scavenger bag to offer extended shelf-life for Bag-in-Box wine, and ultra-resistant monolayer bag for Bag-in-Box hot-filled juice products.
