Oakland-headquartered company Ring Container Technologies has conducted a study to evaluate the sustainability benefits of 100% recyclable canister SmartCAN.

The new canister comprises of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) material.

A third-party sustainability consulting firm Three Peaks Consulting conducted the study to support the canister’s sustainability benefits.

The firm engaged with recycling managers in 12 large US cities such as Memphis, New York, Chicago and Los Angeles.

The study revealed that SmartCAN has broad acceptance in the cities’ recycling programmes.

Additionally, the canister is in line with Federal Trade Commission (FTC) guidelines. It is certified as “Widely Recycled” by How2Recycle label, which is a standardised labelling system.

Ring Container Technologies Business Development vice-president Tim Ferrel said: “Sustainability is deeply ingrained in our company culture, and SmartCAN is 100% recyclable.

“We want our food manufacturing customers and the public at large to understand that it’s both technologically possible and economically viable to produce plastic products that are completely recyclable, made from post-consumer resin, and are as clear and strong as containers made from virgin materials.

“As more companies set their recycled-content goals to meet environmental sustainability initiatives, the demand for post-use PET material will continue to grow, and Ring will be at the forefront of that.”

Last month, Ring Container Technologies partnered with food manufacturer John B. Sanfilippo & Son (JBSS) to provide new lightweight recyclable snack foods packaging.
