Finnish pulp and paper manufacturer Stora Enso has unveiled a new RFID tag technology, called Eco, to provide intelligent packaging functionalities for supply chain, retail and e-commerce applications.

Eco by Stora Enso is a product of the company’s Intelligent Packaging division. It enables companies to produce RFID tags on a 100% fibre-based paper label, offering a plastic-free and recyclable option for packaging authentication.

Integration of the RFID tag with a paper label makes the manufacturing process more scalable and cost-effective.

The company noted that the solution will reduce the carbon footprint for B2B and B2C companies focusing on sustainability.

Last month, Stora Enso acquired Sweden-based Cellutech for an undisclosed amount in a move to support its plans to replace fossil-based materials with renewable materials.

The company offers renewable solutions in packaging, biomaterials, wooden construction and paper. It currently has around 26,000 employees in more than 30 countries.
