The RW85C adhesive is now acknowledged for its releasability in HDPE recycling streams, specifically for natural and white containers, the company said in a press statement.

Additionally, it has been recognised for its alkali/water releasable properties for PET bottle recycling.

UPM Adhesive Materials manager Ecosystem EMEIA Santeri Marjamäki said: “Thanks to the immense research of RecyClass, label material producers can now transparently prove their labels do not hinder the recyclability of HDPE and PET packaging.

“The quality of the highly valued natural and white recyclate can be secured with the right label material, including also the right adhesive technology innovations, which enables the circular economy and enhances sustainability performance. Brand owners will be able to utilise the UPM Adhesive Materials technology approvals to certify their packaging with RecyClass.”

This development builds on the previous approvals the company has secured.

UPM Adhesive Materials director of Consumer Label Solutions EMEIA Przemysław Sawa said: “As packaging regulations like the PPWR [Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation] evolve and sustainability expectations grow, we’re staying ahead of the curve by collaborating with RecyClass to deliver label solutions that meet strict recyclability criteria by design.

“Our label solutions help brand owners hit their sustainability targets and lead the shift toward a circular packaging economy.”

This July, UPM Adhesive Materials, previously known as UPM Raflatac, announced a significant investment in its Mills River factory located in North Carolina, US, to implement new proprietary coating technology.

This technological advancement is aimed at increasing the factory’s output of high-value advanced label materials.
