Amcor has extended its production base in Malaysia with the launch of a new healthcare packaging coating plant in Subang Jaya, Selangor.

The project brings air-knife coating capability to the region for making coated medical paper used in sterile medical device packaging.

It entailed an investment of more than $35m, which was facilitated by Malaysia’s Investment Development Authority (MIDA).

MIDA CEO Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid said: “Beyond expanding capacity, this facility strengthens local supply chain resilience, accelerates technology adoption and supports the development of skilled Malaysian talent, in line with the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 and our National Investment Aspirations.”

With the new plant, Amcor’s healthcare packaging activities in the country now form a fully integrated manufacturing site.

The company said it would add dual sourcing capacity, support supply continuity over the longer term and provide a base for moving products from pilot runs to larger-scale output.

The site would help with trials, technical work with customers and the path to commercial production in the region.

The project also involved cooperation across Amcor’s international operations.

Technical staff from the US worked with employees in Malaysia on installation, start-up and practical training during the commissioning phase.

The plant has inspection equipment and automated production systems for healthcare packaging uses.

It also includes closed-loop controls, in-line quality checks and drying systems intended to support uniform output.

Amcor Asia Pacific flexibles president Chris Kenneally commented: “The opening of this new coating facility underscores our long-term commitment to supporting our partners in the healthcare sector across Asia Pacific.

“It also demonstrates the strength of collaboration across our global network in bringing advanced capabilities to the region and serving customers more effectively.”

Earlier this month, Amcor announced a joint project with Finland’s Metsä Group and food packaging equipment manufacturer G Mondini.

The companies are preparing to present a fibre-based tray system for protein products and chilled ready meals.
