Coveris has launched MonoFlexFibre Pure Twist, a paper-based packaging material for confectionery products.

The material is intended as a substitute for other formats used in twist-wrapped sweets such as lollipops, hard candies and chocolates, and for heat-sealable flow-pack applications for bars and sticks.

The lightweight paper has been developed in line with the sector’s 95/5 criteria for paper recyclability and is intended to provide product protection and operational performance on high-speed packaging lines.

The product is made from a single layer of “lightweight functional paper”.

According to Coveris, it can be used as primary packaging for single or double-twisted sweets, chocolate pralines and lollipops, as well as for heat-sealed chocolate bars in flow packs.

The company said the material is suitable for gravure, flexographic and digital printing.

It also said a move to the paper format does not require significant changes to existing equipment and can be introduced on both high-speed and standard FFS packaging lines.

Coveris said MonoFlexFibre Pure Twist complies with tighter recycling requirements for packaging waste, an issue in confectionery where recyclability and material performance both need to be addressed.

Coveris paper consumer and healthcare business development manager Melinda Bonamour said: “MonoFlexFibre Pure Twist supports this change by helping brands reduce their plastic content without compromising product protection and packaging efficiency.

"By finding the most environmentally and functionally compelling solution for every application, we enable our customers to balance regulatory requirements, costs, and performance, and to consistently align their packaging with their sustainability goals.”

Earlier this month, Coveris said it is investing €1.8m ($2.1m) in two production sites in Poland.

That investment includes equipment and technology aimed at increasing output, improving production speed and strengthening packaging functionality for food, pet food and personal care products.
