Coveris, a sustainable paper and plastic packaging solutions provider, has launched a new monomaterial packaging solution specifically designed for tortilla wraps, aligning with the company's No Waste mission.

This MonoFlex Thermoform film packaging replaces nonrecyclable, mixed-material substrates while ensuring that the products maintain a long shelf life.

The initiative is a result of a collaborative effort with a tortilla wrap manufacturer who was in search of a more sustainable alternative to their existing polyamide/polyethylene packaging structure.

The primary objective was to find a recyclable material that could guarantee a minimum shelf life of six months for tortillas, which contain a low quantity of preservatives.

After comprehensive performance testing at Coveris' Food Science Lab in Gainsborough, UK, the decision was made to utilise a monomaterial-based top and base thermoforming film.

The material provided adequate protection against mould for the sensitive tortilla wraps throughout the testing period while also ensuring that the packaging could be recycled within the same waste stream.

Coveris flexibles business development director Katja Killian said: “We are extremely pleased with the successful commercial launch of MonoFlexThermoform for tortilla wraps. This sustainable alternative to nonrecyclable materials delivers the same shelf-life performance while saving resources and helping customers meet their sustainability targets.

“It also showcases the advantage of collaboration between Coveris' production sites and Film Science Lab expertise, enabling the development of high-performance sustainable packaging solutions.”

The new packaging solution offers enhanced barrier properties that extend product protection and shelf life. It also has strong puncture resistance.

MonoFlex Thermoform enables a straightforward transition on packing lines from other substrates, ensuring compatibility with existing machinery and no loss of packaging efficiency.

Available in both fully printed and unprinted options for the top and base film, the packaging supports conventional and HD flexographic or rotogravure printing.

It also offers finishing options such as matte, gloss, and tactile lacquer, which not only enhance the consumer experience but also create an attractive presentation on store shelves.

Earlier this month, Coveris completed a €9.5m ($11m) investment in its facility located in Halle, Germany.
