Freepoint Eco-Systems International and Source One have announced a long-term collaboration aimed at developing pretreatment facilities for the recycling of plastic waste.

This partnership is set to enhance the pyrolysis infrastructure across Europe by treating various waste streams, including post-consumer waste (PCR).

As part of the agreement, Freepoint Eco-Systems intends to establish a network of pretreatment facilities in strategic European locations.

Source One will serve as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for these installations.

The facilities will be used to convert mixed plastic waste into quality feedstock that can be utilised in recycling processes.

Source One has created a pretreatment concept that has been validated through commercial-scale operations.

This concept is capable of producing feedstock that meets the specifications required for pyrolysis, as well as mechanical processing.

It has been engineered to manage complex waste streams such as mixed plastic packaging and flexible films while minimising energy consumption and environmental impact.

Source One founder and CEO Kai Hoyer said: “Together, we're advancing the circular economy by leveraging cutting-edge recycling technologies and accelerating the high-quality recovery and reuse of plastics.”

Freepoint Eco-Systems Recycling Europe CCO Jacco de Haas said: “This collaboration marks the beginning of a strategic partnership focused on unlocking the value of plastic waste.

“By combining our feedstock strategy with Source One's best-in-class pretreatment platform, we are building critical infrastructure that enables pyrolysis to scale commercially and competitively.”

The agreement will also align with European regulatory frameworks, including the Green Deal, the Circular Economy Action Plan, and the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.

These regulations promote the increased utilisation of recycled materials in plastic packaging.

In July 2024, Freepoint Eco-Systems announced a collaboration with Turkish waste management company Biotrend to create advanced recycling initiatives aimed at diverting end-of-life plastic waste from landfills and incineration.
