Glassmaking standard draft enters consultation

The draft addresses anti-corruption, governance, legal compliance, management systems, reporting and transparency.

ResponsibleGlass has released the initial draft of its International Standard for Glassmaking and started a stakeholder consultation on the sustainability standard, certification and labelling framework.

The consultation period runs for 60 days from 20 July to 18 September 2026.

ResponsibleGlass said it is intended for parties interested in responsible glass production to examine the draft and submit responses before the document is finalised.

The text was prepared by the ResponsibleGlass board, management team and stakeholders under the ResponsibleGlass International Standards Development Procedures.

It follows comments gathered during consultation on the Preliminary Proposals issued earlier this year.

The document is described as the first full draft of the ResponsibleGlass International Standard for Glassmaking.

It addresses anti-corruption, governance, legal compliance, management systems, reporting and transparency.

It also includes responsible sourcing of input materials, covering mined, synthesised and recovered materials, as well as energy supplies.

Other sections deal with environmental performance, including greenhouse gas emissions, water stewardship, biodiversity, waste and emissions management.

The draft further sets out provisions on social responsibility, including occupational health and safety, labour rights, human rights, and engagement with local communities.

It also considers design for sustainability and circularity, including impacts during use and at end of life.

Supporting material in the consultation text includes a glossary of terms, a bibliography and information on future chain of custody and claims requirements.

ResponsibleGlass said comments submitted by 18 September 2026 will be examined by the ResponsibleGlass Secretariat and published after the consultation ends.

The responses will be used in work on a second draft, which is scheduled for publication in 2027 while the final standard is expected to be ratified in 2028.

ResponsibleGlass is a not-for-profit body created in 2025.

It includes participants from across the glass value chain, including manufacturers, raw material suppliers, recyclers, brands, sustainability specialists and civil society organisations.
