Mondi unveils wipes wrap with recycled plastic

It is designed to replace non-recyclable laminates in products that need a tailored barrier, including baby care and household wipes.

Mondi has introduced a new packaging material for wet wipes containing 35% post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic.

The re/loop FlowWrap is a form-fill-and-seal packaging solution made from mono-polypropylene.

It is designed to replace non-recyclable laminates in applications that need a tailored barrier, including baby care, cosmetics and household wipes.

According to the company, the material is compatible with polypropylene mechanical recycling under CEFLEX D4ACE guidelines.

Mondi said internal tests and customer trials found the material delivered sealing, barrier protection and machinability in wet wipe applications at a level similar to virgin-based packaging.

The material can run on existing packaging lines, allowing manufacturers to change over without replacing equipment.

Under the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, this type of plastic packaging will be subject to a 35% recycled content target based on post-consumer plastic waste from 1 January 2030.

The recycled content level in the new wrap could help manufacturers and converters prepare for that requirement while preserving product protection and production efficiency.

Trials carried out on ILAPACK machinery also showed the material could run at very high line speeds in wet wipes packaging.

Mondi consumer flexibles home and personal care business development manager Alessandro D’Agostino said: “With this launch, we show that wet wipes packaging can move towards circularity without sacrificing performance.

"By combining a material designed for recycling with PCR content and excellent machinability, we help customers transition faster towards sustainable packaging solutions while maintaining operational efficiency.”

In a separate development, Mondi recently implemented operational changes at its corrugated packaging facilities in Greven, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Ebersdorf near Coburg, Bavaria, in Germany.

The changes aim to raise plant performance, align both sites with the group’s safety standards and support their long-term role for customers and employees.
