The programme is already available in 1,563 Canadian communities.

Nespresso Canada has rolled out its green bag recycling programme to all Québec municipalities with a sorting centre and a signed contract with its partner, Éco Entreprises Québec (ÉEQ).

Québec is now the second Canadian province to fully implement this programme, following the modernisation of selective collection and the introduction of extended producer responsibility (EPR) in early 2025.

ÉEQ president and CEO Maryse Vermette said: “This recovery and recycling solution, the result of an agreement between Éco Entreprises Québec and Nespresso and made possible with EPR, is part of the circular economy dynamic.

“Throughout Québec, we encourage the public to make the right thing when sorting - for containers, packaging, and printed paper – and this now includes Nespresso aluminium coffee capsules.”

The initiative allows Québec residents to recycle used Nespresso coffee capsules by placing them in a green bag and depositing this bag in their residential recycling bin, alongside other recyclable materials.

The green bags are provided free with every Nespresso online order, in stores, and through the Nespresso Club.

The aluminium capsules, designed to preserve the freshness and quality of Nespresso coffee, are fully recycled, with the material repurposed and coffee grounds used in the province's biomethanisation process.

As a B Corp-certified company, Nespresso says it continues to develop solutions to support manufacturers in managing the life cycle of their products.

The programme, already available in 1,563 Canadian communities, including parts of Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and all of Prince Edward Island, marks a significant step toward expanding the initiative nationwide.

Nespresso Canada president Carlos Oyanguren said: “The expanded rollout of the green bag programme throughout the province has been a Nespresso priority for years.

“In fact, Québec was where the green bag programme was first launched in 2016. We are proud of the enthusiasm this programme has generated among consumers and municipalities, and of being able to make this easy recycling solution available provincewide.

“For over a decade, Nespresso has been playing a key role in reducing waste in the country by implementing innovative recycling solutions. Combining quality and sustainability has always been at the heart of our DNA.”

Earlier this month, Nespresso Canada partnered with Circular Materials to launch the scheme in Ontario.
