European sustainable packaging solutions provider Saica Group's Hartlepool facility has achieved an environmental milestone by being the first in the UK to receive the Saica Zero to Landfill Certificate.

This accolade, awarded by Saica Natur, the company's division dedicated to waste management, recognises sites that divert at least 95% of waste from landfill.

The Hartlepool plant underwent a six-month audit, during which nearly 4,000 tons (t) of waste were evaluated.

The TÜV SÜD audit confirmed a 97% diversion rate, with no significant deviations. The audit process scrutinised waste management practices, compliance with UK waste legislation, and the infrastructure and support from Saica Natur.

This accomplishment was made possible through the partnership of Simon McLeod, HSE manager at Saica Pack Hartlepool, and Colesia Pryse, national account manager at Saica Natur.

They conducted a detailed review of waste segregation and management, preparing the necessary documentation for independent verification.

Saica Pack UK & Ireland country manager Simon Banks said: “We are delighted that Saica Hartlepool has been honoured with the Saica Natur Zero to Landfill recognition. This demonstrates Saica Group’s commitment to not just deliver sustainable solutions and exceptional service, but also to leading by example.”

The certificate requires annual performance reviews and a comprehensive reassessment every three years, ensuring sustained commitment and ongoing improvement.

Saica Natur UK country manager Jim Malone said: “With evolving waste regulations in the UK, Saica Pack Hartlepool is setting a benchmark for industry best practice.

“At Saica Natur, we support businesses to reduce operational costs, improve efficiencies, and minimise their environmental footprint.”

In March 2025, Saica Flex, the flexible packaging arm of Saica Group, launched its newly upgraded facilities and machinery at its Wigan site in the UK.
