UPM brings Forte precoating to SCK release paper line

The integration is aimed at assisting silicone coaters and labelstock producers in improving production efficiency.

UPM Specialty Materials has introduced its proprietary Forte precoating technology to its SCK release base paper portfolio, a product line tailored for the US market.

The integration is aimed at assisting silicone coaters and labelstock producers in improving production efficiency and controlling costs.

The company states that the addition of Forte technology allows manufacturers to optimise silicone curing and anchoring during release liner production.

According to UPM, the technology supports the use of silicone formulations with up to 50% less platinum and can enable curing at temperatures up to 15% lower, leading to potential reductions in both raw material use and energy consumption.

The company added that this development can help increase coating speeds and deliver stable release behaviour, depending on the silicone formulation applied.

UPM Specialty Materials product portfolio management director Jukka Kotilainen said: “UPM SCK Forte base papers give our customers a more efficient and predictable coating surface that supports faster, more reliable silicone curing and anchoring.

“With platinum prices remaining high, the ability to reduce platinum concentration matters more than ever. Our technical team is there to help customers fully leverage these benefits.”

UPM Specialty Materials has more than four decades of experience in producing papers for packaging and labelling, with manufacturing facilities in China, Finland, and Germany. Globally, the company employs approximately 1,800 people.

UPM as a group employs around 15,100 people worldwide and reported annual sales of €9.7bn. The company’s shares are traded on Nasdaq Helsinki.

In December 2025, UPM introduced UPM Circular Renewable Black, a bio-based black pigment designed to be detectable by near-infrared sorting technology.
