Valmet to begin talks for temporary layoffs in Finland

The negotiations cover approximately 2,400 employees across various locations and business groups.

Valmet is set to begin change negotiations in Finland in accordance with the Finnish Co-operation Act, as part of a plan to address a decline in workload.

The negotiations cover approximately 2,400 employees across various locations and business groups.

These include parts of the packaging and paper; and pulp, energy and circularity business areas, along with certain functions and the global supply unit.

The proposed measures may include temporary layoffs of less than 90 days, which would be implemented between June 2026 and the end of December 2026.

The Finland-based company said: "The planned actions aim to safeguard profitability and competitiveness by adapting capacity to the lower-than-anticipated workload, which is partly due to customer-driven project delays, continued weak demand in paper and board machine markets, and continued softness in biomaterials services markets."

These measures are projected to result in cost savings of approximately €8m ($9.36m) during 2026.

The final details regarding the timing and scope of these actions will be determined during the negotiation process.

Valmet employs 18,500 people worldwide, including 5,900 in Finland.

This move follows a series of similar restructuring efforts initiated by the company last month in its international manufacturing operations.

Valmet previously began talks regarding the potential closure of its Sundsvall site in Sweden, alongside restructuring at its Gothenburg facility and the Jelenia Góra site in Poland.

Those measures could impact up to 170 positions in Sundsvall, 55 roles in Gothenburg, and 130 jobs in Jelenia Góra as the company continues to adjust its global capacity.
