Xaar launches Versatex Black printbar for traceability

The system is built to print 1D and 2D barcodes, as well as human-readable codes.

Xaar has introduced a new version of its Versatex printbar at interpack 2026, adding black 1D and 2D variable data printing for analogue label presses and finishing lines.

The new Versatex Black is intended for markets where traceability is a key requirement.

It allows label converters to add codes and variable data to existing analogue presses while keeping current production workflows in place.

The system is built to print 1D and 2D barcodes, as well as human-readable codes.

Xaar said it is suited to uses such as serialisation, personalisation, authentication codes and supply chain tracking.

The launch comes as businesses prepare for coding changes linked to GS1 Sunrise 2027 and as traceability gains importance in sectors such as food, pharmaceuticals and consumer goods.

Xaar said the need to place clear, scannable codes on items at production speed is increasing.

According to the company, Versatex Black supports real-time data printing during production, allowing each label or package to carry distinct information for supply chain use. Xaar said this can help with compliance and brand protection.

The product uses its inkjet technologies, including High Laydown capability and TF Technology, to maintain stable delivery of black inks at high speed.

At the same time as the launch, Xaar was named a GS1 UK Approved Partner.

This status supports its work with converters and brands preparing for GS1 Sunrise 2027 and confirms that Versatex Black can produce GS1-compliant barcodes at production speeds.

The release is part of Xaar’s broader work in coding and marking.

Xaar product manager Tom Mooney said: “Versatex Black has been developed to help converters add high-quality variable data digitally within their existing processes.

“As traceability and compliance requirements continue to grow, particularly with GS1 Sunrise 2027 approaching, it gives them a practical way to deliver clear, consistent 1D and 2D codes at production speed while also opening up new opportunities for digital connectivity and consumer engagement.”

In March, Xaar and Polipress International partnered to offer digital embellishment technology in Italy’s premium label market, with particular traction among wine label producers.
