The facility will supply recycled glass to O-I’s local manufacturing plant. It will also process recycled glass sourced from Washington.

The firms selected the Portland site due to the availability of high-quality recycled glass through the Oregon Container Deposit Program.

O-I Portland plant manager Pedro Tchmola said that the processing of recycled glass at the new plant is crucial for the company’s sustainability efforts.

"This new facility will help us to reduce our use of virgin raw materials, lowering our overall environmental impact," Tchmola added.

The use of recycled glass in the manufacturing process is vital for O-I’s sustainability efforts. Every 10% of recycled glass used cuts down energy costs by 2 to 3% and greenhouse gas emissions by 4 to 10%.

The Glass to Glass facility will provide employment for 15 people. Construction commenced in June. O-I’s other plant in Portland produces over one million bottles per day, primarily beer bottles for local microbreweries.
