Ardagh Glass Packaging-Europe (AGP-Europe), a leading manufacturer of glass packaging for the beverage industry, has agreed to acquire Svensk Glasåtervinning (SGÅ), a major Swedish glass recycler.
The deal, expected to close in the second quarter (Q2) of 2024, will solidify AGP-Europe’s commitment to sustainable glass packaging and strengthen its presence in the Swedish market.
This acquisition allows AGP-Europe to secure a reliable source of high-quality recycled glass cullet, a critical raw material for its low-carbon glass packaging solutions.
The deal also comes at a pivotal time for Swedish glass recycling.
Recent regulations require municipalities to take over post-consumer glass collection and introduce property-based collection systems.
AGP-Europe’s move assures that glass collected within Sweden remains within the country’s borders for use in domestic glass packaging production, furthering its circular economy goals.

By GlobalData“Buying SGÅ is the perfect complement to our glass production in Sweden,” said Martin Petersson, CEO of AGP-Europe.
“It will protect glass recycling and ensure we continue to close the glass loop, securing the supply of recycled glass cullet – one of our most important raw materials for lower-carbon glass packaging.”
Magnus Andersson, CEO of SGÅ, added: “Ardagh knows and understands the glass industry, including glass recycling, and as a result, the glass industry in Sweden is fully supportive of the new ownership.”
The Swedish Brewery Association, a former co-owner of SGÅ, also welcomes the acquisition: “We, along with the other co-owners, are very pleased to sell to AGP-Europe. They have been crucial for the development of high-quality glass with a high ratio of recycled glass cullet,” said Anna-Karin Fondberg, its CEO.
“The next step is very important for the Swedish food and beverage sector to secure the supply of sustainable glass packaging with a relatively low CO² [carbon dioxide] footprint.”
By initiating the process to acquire SGÅ, AGP-Europe takes a significant step towards a more sustainable future for the glass packaging industry in Sweden.
