US-based label printing service provider Lightning Labels has launched a line of eco-friendly label materials including a fully compostable paper made from rocks.

The compostable paper, named BioStone, is a durable, biodegradable and compostable label material made from stone and has good ink adhesion properties, the company said.

A second material is Recycled Kraft, which is recycled from 100% post-consumer waste and gives labels an earthy, organic appearance, suitable for machine application.

The launch also includes Recycled Vellum and Earth First PLA, a plant-based water and oil resistant plastic material with a permanent adhesive.

The label materials have been designed to meet product manufacturers’ growing demands for green packaging solutions, which is expected to rise to $212bn by 2015.
