Avery Dennison, a radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag manufacturer, has introduced an RFID label that is the first to earn Association of Plastic Recyclers Design for Recyclability certification.

The company noted that its label integrates seamlessly with North America’s polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling system, establishing a new industry standard.

The label is said to have been crafted by combining its unique CleanFlake adhesive with RFID expertise.

It separates cleanly from PET during mechanical recycling, reducing impurities.
This development helps brands achieve their recycling and waste minimisation targets.

PET is commonly used in bottles, food containers, cosmetics, and other household goods.

Recyclable labels and adhesives decrease contamination and improve material reclamation efficiency. This strengthens the overall performance of the plastic recycling process.

The distinctive RFID label uniquely marks items, enhancing sorting and recovery operations. It improves the quality of recycled PET and extends its usable life.

Avery Dennison’s technology optimises supply chain performance and reduces waste.

The company plans to make the APR-certified label broadly available later this year.

It is also working with independent bodies to expand PET recycling certification worldwide.

This effort aims to assist brands in reaching their recyclability objectives.

Avery Dennison Materials Group global R&D and sustainability vice-president Pascale Wautelet said: “RFID technology is essential for the effective and sustainable management of modern supply chains, supporting brands with greater inventory visibility, product traceability and loss prevention.

“APR’s recognition marks a pivotal step forward in advancing circular packaging and supporting the global transition to sustainable material use.

“As consumer goods companies set increasingly ambitious recycling targets, Avery Dennison remains committed to helping our customers reduce waste by investing in innovation and designing products that can be effectively recycled.”

Last October, Avery Dennison and the University of Memphis launched an exhibit showcasing how RFID technology is transforming packaging and logistics.
