Burgopak has partnered with card manufacturer Placard to design a dual-slide bank card packaging format for fintech company Emerge.

The new pack departs from the standard approach of mailing cards attached to letters in plain envelopes. It instead employs a belt-driven sliding mechanism that presents the card as the package is opened.

Burgopak aims to address what it terms “unboxing apathy” commonly experienced with traditional methods of bank card delivery.

Placard was responsible for manufacturing the packaging, which demands precise engineering to ensure proper functioning of the sliding feature.

The design utilises 300gsm artboard and incorporates holographic foil and spot UV printing.

Emerge creative director Sasha Fowler led the direction and development of the concept, noting that the packaging was designed to align with the company’s brand identity.

Fowler said: “From the get-go, we wanted the bank card’s packaging to be an extension of Emerge’s brand. The goal was to elevate what’s typically a routine experience into something worth remembering.”

The bank card is currently available in New Zealand.

Placard sales and marketing GM Tess Barone said: “The manufacturing of a pack like this, with a belt-driven opening mechanism, requires tolerances of less than half a millimetre to ensure that the opening and closing action is smooth.

“This is what Burgopak specialises in and why we partner with them. They precision-manufacture their packs so that the opening mechanism works perfectly, every time.”
