Slovenian dairy producer Pomurske Mlekarne has teamed up with SIG to introduce its milk in aseptic cartons that do not use aluminium.
The relaunch of Pomurske Mlejko 2.8% low fat milk now features SIG’s Terra MidiBloc Alu-free + Full barrier packaging.

The newly adopted carton replaces the conventional aluminium layer with a thin polymer coating, designed to protect the product from oxygen, light, moisture and loss of aroma.
The packaging consists of over 80% paper, excluding closure, and reduces the material structure from three layers to two while cutting its carbon footprint.
Pomurske Mlekarne director Anthony Tomažin said: “Our close cooperation with SIG has enabled us to be first to market in Slovenia with SIG Terra Alu-free + Full barrier packaging material – a pivotal move forward in sustainable packaging for the dairy industry and an integral part of our development as we celebrate our 80th anniversary this year.
“We’re excited to launch our first Pomursko Mlejko product in the new alu-layer-free packaging material.”

The new packaging is also fully compatible with existing SIG filling lines and does not impact their performance.

SIG was an early mover in offering aluminium-free aseptic cartons for oxygen-insensitive products such as plain white milk, having first introduced this development in 2010.
Last month, Thailand’s Benefitt brand, part of Lactasoy, launched a high-protein UHT milk in SIG SmallBloc cartons. The product is now available nationwide through 7-Eleven outlets.
