After carrying out market research in 2020, the company started examining DMF, which uses natural cellulose fibres.

In 2023, it opened a dedicated facility and related setup and installed its first DMF production line.

A service agreement provides for Andritz to assist Hébert Group during commissioning of the lines, to complete a Site Acceptance Test and secure stable operation.

The group now makes trays and lids with DMF technology under the Herpulp name.

It is also reviewing the possibility of producing deep-draw items at a later stage.

DMF combines airlaid forming, non-woven converting and thermo-forming in one industrial process.

The companies said this approach reduces water and energy use and supports recyclable packaging systems.

Andritz said cost-effective DMF production depends on suitable low-cost raw materials, combined with experience in pressing and moulding for larger-scale manufacturing.

To support wider use of the technology, Andritz has invested in an Airlaid DMF technical centre in Grenoble, France.

The company service model aims to help manufacturers move from pilot testing to full-scale DMF lines while maintaining confidentiality.

Hébert Group chief commercial officer Julien Hébert said: “We listen closely to our customers to create products that are chosen by the top names in the food and cosmetics industries. In the course of these discussions, we have gained a deeper understanding of their expectations regarding sustainable development.

“This approach has naturally driven us to diversify our technologies, creating new opportunities and strengthening our position as a pioneer in other raw materials and environmentally friendly processes.”
