Gerresheimer, the German manufacturer of drug delivery systems and pharmaceutical packaging, established a new tubular glass plant in Zhenjiang Dagang, China, to produce glass primary packaging for medicines.
The plant is owned and managed by Gerresheimer Shuangfeng Pharmaceutical Glass Co., a joint venture between Gerresheimer Group and China’s Shuangfeng Glass.

Construction of the facility commenced in 2022 and operations started in July 2026. The Zhenjiang Dagang plant is the company’s fourth tubular glass facility in China.
The site currently manufactures pharmaceutical vials and ampoules mainly for the Chinese market. It doubled Gerresheimer’s capacity for primary packaging for injectable medicines in China.
The company employs around 250 people at the facility and anticipates creating approximately 50 further positions over the next few years.

The new glass packaging facility is located within the Zhenjiang Economic and Technological Development Zone (ZETDZ) in Jiangsu Province.
Located on the east side of Zhenjiang’s downtown area, the ZETDZ has a total area of 228km².
Gerresheimer tubular glass plant details
Gerresheimer’s tubular glass plant spans approximately 40,000m² (430,556ft2). The site also reserves an additional 33,000m² for potential future expansion.
The facility is equipped with advanced glass-forming lines and highly automated, intelligent production and logistics systems. It manufactures borosilicate glass vials and ampoules in multiple sizes and specifications, meeting China’s Good Manufacturing Practice requirements for injectable pharmaceutical packaging.
Controlled environments at the site include more than 2,700m² of ISO Class 8 cleanroom space, an ISO Class 7 microbiology laboratory and more than 700m² of ISO Class 8 space dedicated to silicone coating of vials and ampoules.
The facility operates under an ISO-certified quality and environmental management framework and holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certifications.
Sustainability features
The Zhenjiang Dagang facility incorporates a range of sustainability measures. It was planned and constructed to meet China’s Green Factory guidelines and the US Green Building Council’s LEED Gold criteria.
A two megawatt-peak rooftop photovoltaic array supplies renewable electricity for on-site consumption.
Water is conserved through systematic collection and reuse, including rainwater harvesting and recovery of condensate from air-conditioning systems. Waste heat from production is repurposed to provide heating for other areas of the plant.
These measures, covering energy and resource efficiency and the use of renewable electricity, also support the Gerresheimer Group’s stated sustainability objectives.
Pharma packaging product portfolio details of Gerresheimer
Gerresheimer manufactures ampoules in flint and amber glass with filling capacities from 1ml to 50ml. The range covers straight-stem, funnel-type and closed formats conforming to ISO types B, C and D, with break options including One Point Cut, Colour Break Ring and Score Ring.
The company also produces cartridges with fill volumes between 1.5ml and 3ml for a variety of pharmaceutical uses.
In addition, Gerresheimer’s portfolio includes vials marketed under the Gx Vials Platform, prefillable syringes under the Gx Syringes Platform and the Gx Cap smart closure for prescription vials.
