Cosmo Films has introduced a transparent biodegradable film for fresh food packaging uses, targeting both material performance and environmental considerations.

The product is a co-extruded biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film with heat-sealable and treated layers on each side.

It has oxo-biodegradable characteristics and is intended to break down in two to 2.5 years when exposed to suitable conditions.

The material is aimed at packaging formats that need clarity, sealing capability and fog control.

One side of the film is made to provide antifog performance in both chilled and warm conditions, helping to reduce moisture-related misting and preserve visibility inside the pack.

The reverse side is designed for printing, with ink adhesion properties intended to support pack graphics.

The film also offers machinability, optical performance, heat-seal strength, hot-tack strength and a low seal initiation temperature.

These characteristics are intended to support packaging line efficiency and seal reliability in fresh produce and other temperature-sensitive uses.

The film is intended for fresh-cut vegetables, salads and meat.

The material may also be used in flower wrapping because of its clarity and processing features.

Cosmo Films global business head Kulbhushan Malik said: “Fresh food packaging requires films to perform across multiple parameters, from optical clarity and antifogging to seal integrity and machinability.

“With the transparent antifog biodegradable film, we have focused on engineering these functional properties into a single BOPP film while incorporating oxo-biodegradable characteristics. The development reflects our continued focus on application-led innovation and creating specialised film solutions aligned with evolving packaging requirements.”

In February, Cosmo Films introduced a new sealable, peelable transparent anti-fog BOPET (PET) lidding film intended for use in packaging refrigerated and fresh foods.

The product is designed to improve product visibility on shelves by reducing fogging that can obscure contents during storage and display.
