A fourth-year food technology student from New Zealand’s Massey University is studying whether waste from apple processing can be used in paper packaging, with support from a scholarship provided by Revo Packaging.
Ed Ron Ng is focusing on apple pomace, the mix of skins, pulp and seeds left after juicing or other processing.

The research is testing whether this material can be mixed with wood pulp to make paper-based packaging with stronger performance.
According to Ng, the work aims to contribute to a circular bioeconomy by finding a use for material that would otherwise be thrown away and by reducing the dependence on less sustainable packaging materials.
He said: “Apples are processed for juice almost year-round in Hawke’s Bay, creating a continuous supply of pomace. It’s currently a low-value by-product used for stock feed but has shown promise for cellulose-based packaging, with the potential to improve on existing materials even before additives are added.”
Early results indicated that adding apple pomace to wood pulp may improve some mechanical features when compared with paper made only from wood pulp.
Funding linked to the scholarship was used to commission a laboratory-scale handsheet paper-making system for the research.
This has allowed paper test sheets to be produced in line with international testing standards.
The current phase of the study is looking at how to improve barrier properties.
The project remains at the proof-of-concept stage. So far, the findings suggest apple pomace could act as a supplementary fibre source alongside conventional wood-based material, while also improving several material characteristics.
The next phase will examine commercial viability and consider how the material might fit into either new or existing packaging production systems.
The REVO Packaging scholarship has also covered access to specialised equipment, materials and testing, along with travel needed to gather fruit-processing waste streams for the study.
Originally from Singapore, Ng came to food technology through a different route, first completing a Diploma in Applied Chemistry. He later gained industry experience through a quality control internship with Takasago ITL and work as an assistant brewer at 1925 Craft Brewery.
Project supervisor packaging technology senior lecturer Eli Gray-Stuart said: “Scholarships such as these provide essential support, both financially and by helping students build research capability and gain experience solving real industry challenges. Industry support allows students to make connections, become excited about research and development and explore the possibilities it presents.”
