SÜDPACK has introduced a polypropylene (PP)-based film structure for spouted pouches, extending the use of mono-PP laminates into this packaging format.

The pouch is made using CarbonLite PurePP, a material intended for applications requiring product protection and a package structure compatible with recycling.

According to the company, its sealing performance and integration of the spout are designed to maintain seal strength and prevent leakage during handling and distribution.

The packaging concept was developed for cold-filled drinkable yoghurt.

SÜDPACK said the work drew on its extrusion capabilities, as well as previous collaboration with machine and spout manufacturers in fruit purée filling applications.

According to the company, the films were developed for cold filling of drinkable yoghurt and other dairy products using packaging materials that undergo UVC or hydrogen peroxide treatment to decrease microbial load.

The barrier properties can be adjusted for oxygen and water vapour requirements and, based on internal testing, the films provide the same shelf life as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), aluminium or polyethylene (PE) laminates currently in use.

The structure is based on a recycling-oriented design.

When paired with a PP spout, the full package can be processed in the PP recycling stream.

SÜDPACK said the solution was developed in line with PPWR design principles and has a recyclability rate of more than 95%.

Based on raw materials and production, its internal calculations indicate that the CO₂e footprint per square metre of a PP-based spouted pouch with a film thickness of 111μm is more than 40% lower than that of a 103μm PET / aluminium / PE laminate.

It added that conventional laminate structures are typically directed to energy recovery at end of life while the PP-based format can be mechanically recycled.
