Tetra Pak is developing a paper-based wrapping format for ice cream manufacturers, with a phased launch planned from the fourth quarter of 2026.

The material contains up to 85% paper from FSC-certified forests and other controlled sources, noted the packaging firm.

The format is intended to provide another packaging option for ice cream products while meeting the requirements of cold-chain distribution.

The wrap has a thin construction and multiple layers designed to protect the product during manufacturing, storage and transport.

The initial rollout is planned for Europe, with more markets to follow over time.

Tetra Pak Food Solutions vice president Peter Lindstrom said: “Ice cream is one of the world’s most loved food categories, and innovation now extends beyond flavours and formats. Packaging is becoming an increasingly important way for brands to differentiate, attract attention and respond to changing consumer expectations.

“Tetra Pak Ice Cream Wrap gives producers a new way to create a distinctive consumer experience, combining the familiar appearance of paper with the functionality required for ice cream products.”

Testing is under way with European ice cream producers, including Sweden-based Triumf Glass.

The trials are assessing how the format performs in active production settings and collecting consumer feedback before a broader commercial launch.

Triumf Glass marketing director Moa Frisk Lönnblom said: “Innovation is an important part of our business, and we’re excited to together with Tetra Pak, explore how the ice cream wrap can create new opportunities in the ice cream category. It has the potential to offer consumers something genuinely different and help shape the future of ice cream packaging.”
