Paper packaging company Nfinite has completed a continuous roll-to-roll coating test using its Atmospheric Pressure Spatial Atomic Layer Deposition (AP-SALD) technology.

The test took place at the company’s pilot facility in Waterloo, Ontario.

Nfinite coated a 24-inch-wide paper web for more than 100 metres at a speed of 100 metres per minute.

The company is targeting continuous coating runs of thousands of metres by the end of the year.

Nfinite said the trial showed that its AP-SALD platform could operate continuously under manufacturing conditions.

It also reported consistent coating across the paper web, with moisture barriers recording rates below 0.2 g/m2/day in tropical conditions.

According to the company, the results indicate that the coated paper could have a projected shelf life comparable with metallised plastic films.

Nfinite is developing barrier paper through its AP-SALD process.

The company was spun out from the University of Waterloo and is scaling its roll-to-roll production platform for recyclable paper packaging intended for food and consumer goods applications.

The latest test forms part of Nfinite’s plans to establish its first commercial manufacturing facility and supply barrier paper to packaging markets globally.

Nfinite CEO Miguel Galvez said: “This milestone demonstrates that our vision is becoming an industrial reality.

“For years, the industry has recognised the potential of spatial atomic layer deposition for packaging, but questioned whether it could ever be scaled for continuous manufacturing. We have now demonstrated that it can.”
