Such formats can support recycling and reduce environmental impact.

The partnership also covers preparations for European Union packaging and environmental requirements. These include extended producer responsibility (EPR) and the packaging and packaging waste regulation (PPWR).

Kao and SCGP will explore the use of AI, digital technologies and data analytics across their value chains.

The work aims to improve efficiency and identify opportunities for future innovation and new business development.

Kao Industrial (Thailand) president Akira Nishimaki said: “Kao is delighted to strengthen our collaboration with SCGP through the ‘Innovation and Sustainability Partnership’, building on the cooperation that began in 2022.

“Both organisations will combine their expertise and strengths to develop packaging innovations that meet consumer needs and are environmentally friendly, while promoting resource efficiency, advancing the circular economy and applying digital technologies to create new business opportunities.”

The companies have already developed mono-material refill packaging for Magiclean Natural Essence floor cleaner in a 700ml format.

Kao and SCGP plan to later increase the use of post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic. They will also develop pulp and paper-based packaging intended to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

The companies will additionally work on improving packing and transportation efficiency, product ease of use and display.

Their plans include reducing waste and promoting resource recovery and reuse.

Kao and SCGP will also assess applications of AI and digital technologies across the supply chain, alongside opportunities to further develop their chemicals businesses.

SCG Packaging CEO Wichan Jitpukdee said: “This renewed partnership will combine Kao’s expertise in chemicals with SCGP’s capabilities in materials, packaging and solutions to develop innovations that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve efficiency and meet market needs, while supporting readiness for EPR and PPWR requirements.”
