The material replaces conventional fossil-based material in the pouch structure.
Mondi said the format can be used for food, home, and personal care packaging, where flexible packaging must meet performance requirements.
I’m green bio-based EMEA commercial director Tim Wagler said: “Collaborations like this show how combining renewable feedstock with design innovation can unlock new possibilities for packaging. Together with partners like Mondi, we are advancing solutions that contribute to a lower‑carbon future.”
Laser marking is applied during the converting process. This removes the need for inks and additional processing steps associated with printed packaging.
The approach can shorten artwork-change processes, allow greater personalisation, and simplify supply-chain operations.
Mondi’s internal product impact assessment found that the bio-based, laser-marked StripPouch had lower CO₂ emissions than a fossil-based, printed, and laminated plastic stand-up pouch.
The assessment compared the formats while retaining the functional performance expected of flexible packaging.
The environmental performance of I’m green bio-based is also assessed through Life Cycle Assessment.
Braskem has sold its plant-based plastic portfolio for more than 15 years.
The materials are made from responsibly sourced sugarcane and use renewable feedstocks, transparent life-cycle data, and third-party verified carbon benefits.
Mondi Consumer Flexibles technical service, R&D and innovation manager Jens Kösters said: “Customers are under growing pressure to meet sustainability targets while managing increasingly complex product portfolios and changing consumer demands.
“This concept advances circularity with the use of bio-based materials and greater artwork flexibility in a single solution, helping brands respond more quickly to market requirements while progressing towards their circularity goals.”
