Specialty chemicals manufacturer Clariant with its Healthcare Packaging business unit has developed a combination of packaging solution that can retain the effectiveness and extend the shelf life of probiotics in nutraceutical products.
The new packaging solutions prevent the probiotics from being exposed to oxygen, moisture and light, which can all damage its potency.

Clariant Healthcare Packaging product manager Stephane Rault said: “As probiotics are living ‘good’ microorganisms, it is essential to protect them from exposure to elements, oxygen, moisture, and UV light, that can damage or kill the probiotics along with their effectiveness.
“The optimal way to protect the most sensitive probiotics often involves a combination of ‘active’ and ‘passive’ solutions.”
The passive solutions act as the first line of defence for probiotics that possess strong barrier properties such as Clariant’s Oxy-Guard bottles.
The US FDA and EU regulations compliant Oxy-Guard bottles come with a six-layer, extrusion blow-moulded structure and are reported to offer better oxygen-barrier protection than the standard single-layer polyethylene bottles.

Oxy-Guard bottles are available in different sizes and can be used in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications.
The canisters, packets or cap inserts act as oxygen scavengers and provide ‘active’ protection against oxygen exposure.
These scavengers are inserted into the package or bottle to absorb oxygen.
It is capable of absorbing the residual oxygen present during packaging and the oxygen molecules that enter the package within its shelf-life.
Clariant’s humidity-neutral PharmaKeep is an oxygen scavenger, which when combined with a desiccant can simultaneously adsorb moisture.
