The solution will allow brand owners to switch from conventional plastic to paper, which is a renewable material that is also recyclable.

Recyclable Flow Wrap is also designed to meet medium to high barrier requirements of packaging products such as chocolate bars, other confectionery and bakery items.

Recyclable Flow Wrap project manager Peter Åström said: “We are happy to launch a paper-based flow wrap solution.

“The product is recyclable as paper and brand owners don’t have to compromise neither product shelf life nor converting productivity in comparison to plastic packaging options.”

Syntegon has used its technology to verify the paper-based flow wrap and also tested it on its retrofit upgrade kit “paper-ON-form”. A patent application is still pending for the solution.

According to BillerudKorsnäs, Recyclable flow wrap with Syntegon upgrade kit paper-ON-form can be deployed on current horizontal flow wrapping machines and new flow wrappers from Syntegon Packaging Systems.

Horizontal Packaging sustainability project manager Christoph Langohr said: “Our retrofit kit allows customers the transition to paper packaging on their existing Syntegon Packaging Systems horizontal flow wrapping machine – without any restrictions regarding speed compared to the existing for cold-sealable paper.”

In May this year, BillerudKorsnäs introduced a new life cycle assessment tool that evaluates the environmental impact of different packaging solutions.
