US-based non-profit trade association Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) has announced plans to launch a confidential survey for its Recyclability Protocol & Certification programme.

The protocol for fibre-based packaging was launched in June this year. It is being developed to help provide clarity on the recyclability of products in the marketplace.

The survey is part of the next stage of development of the protocol and certification programme.

In the coming weeks, contractor Moore & Associates will manage the confidential survey of Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) inventory across the nation.

The survey will enable ISRI to gain insight on MRF inventory of packaging recyclables based on materials, shape or size and local differences in technology and capacity.

ISRI president Robin Wiener said: “Moving to the next stage of this protocol development emphasises the full efforts put forth by ISRI to ensure this critical need is met.

“We look forward to receiving the survey results and taking the next steps to ensure this protocol meets the needs of producers as they work to design with recycling in mind and of consumers interested in being more conscious shoppers as it relates to recycling.”

In addition, the results will support in the programme’s development and could lead to increase in materials capturing rates at MRFs.

Once completed, packaging manufacturers, packaging designers, and brand owners will benefit from increased understanding of products recyclability right from the design stage.

ISRI intends to complete the development of the Protocol & Certification early next year.
