North American restaurant chain Earls Restaurant Group has partnered with zero-waste packaging service Reusables to launch a zero-waste takeaway initiative.

The scheme will allow customers to collect or take delivery of foods through their ordering channels, including DoorDash, in reusable takeaway packaging.

It is initially being launched at the Earls Test Kitchen in Vancouver, Canada.

Earls Restaurant Group operates a network of 68 locations, 58 of which are in Canada and ten in the US.

Earls Restaurant Group chief brand officer Kristin Vekteris said: “At Earls, we are committed to supporting the environment and sustainability movement, and are excited to pilot Reusables and give our customers more options to reduce their reliance on single-use plastics.

“It even goes beyond sustainability because the food stays warm and travels better in their stainless steel bowls.”

Reusables provides tech-enabled reusable packaging-as-a-service designed to help food businesses reduce their packaging waste.

Since its launch last year, the company has seen its packaging adopted by restaurants and retailers across Vancouver.

Reusables is investing in Internet of Things (IoT) enabled tracking technology with the aim to ‘make reusable food packaging mainstream’.

The company recently partnered with IGA at its Robson Street location in Vancouver.

It is backed by Ryan Holmes’ LOI Venture and plans to launch in more cities later this year.

Reusables CEO and co-founder Jason Hawkins said: “Earls is an iconic brand in Vancouver and we are honoured to team-up with them to make reuse easy for their staff and customers.

“Our reusable-as-a-service enables companies like Earls to seamlessly integrate reuse into their existing business.

“The demand for our platform has grown significantly since launching one year ago, and its exciting to see established food businesses like Earls and IGA showing leadership in their industries.”
