Finland’s Plastiroll has developed a new easily processable and transparent biodegradable packaging film, Bioska 506, that is designed to improve the shelf life of fresh produce such as fruits and vegetables.
Organic food delivery company Abel & Cole has become the first firm in the UK to use the packaging for its vegetables.

The film is made from fully compostable and biodegradable raw materials, and does not contain any genetically modified organisms.
Abel & Cole production head Will Robinson said: "We looked at many packaging sources to see what is the best to recycle or compost, what was GMO-free and what keeps our product quality as high as possible. And Plastiroll really lived up to its promises."
Bioska 506 can be composted at home or in a usual bin where it decomposes within a few months.
The film keeps fruit and vegetables fresh for longer periods of time by retaining moisture and preventing condensation inside the package.

By GlobalDataAbel & Cole currently delivers 80,000 boxes of organic food and recipe kits every week.
Robinson added: "We trialled two to three different products [including cardboard coating and biodegradable plastics] before we picked Plastiroll.
"We chose them because of their price, great usability and the fact the film really does what it says, it keeps our carrots very fresh."
Abel & Cole is also planning to expand the use of the new packaging bags for all its carrots supply, which is around 10t per week.
Designed to reduce costly food and packaging waste, the new packaging film can be used in various sectors such as flowers, clothes and magazines.
Plastiroll’s film had been previously used by Finnish retail chain Kesko.
