Toray Advanced Film, sister company of Toray Plastics (America), has developed a new high-barrier, transparent, aluminium oxide-coated polyester film for retort pouches.

Developed in Japan, the barrialox sbr2 film is said to offer improved mechanical properties, including high-strength and stability.

Toray Plastics (America) has noted that retort pouches, which are used to package cooked food, have become popular among consumers who value the convenience of microwaveable meals and ‘on-the-go’ foods.

The film offers a durable oxygen and moisture barrier for retort pouches.

Torayfan Division sales and marketing senior director Chris Voght said: "A film that maintains its inherent barrier-durability during and after converting and retorting processes is essential for a successful retort application."

The barrialox sbr2 film is claimed to be resistant to pinholing, flex-cracking, scuffing and abrasion.

It is reverse-printed to produce a colourful, attractive package that can be microwaved in standard laminations.

The solution can be laminated with Toray’s TreaTear DR72 film for added convenience and heat-sealing capabilities.

TreaTear DR72 is cast polypropylene (CPP) sealant film that provides an easy, straight tear for opening the package.

Barrialox SBR2 can also be used to produce non-retort clear packaging and lidding lamination applications.
