Valmet has secured a contract from Kotkamills in Finland to convert the latter’s existing printing paper production line to create quality folding boxboard and barrierboard grades.

The contract is a part of a €70m agreement signed by Kotkamills with Valmet and Bellmer Vaahto Paper Machinery and will involve delivery of different types of coating units, new centre-driven OptiReel, as well as a new OptiWin two-drum compact winder by Valmet.

Valmet paper mills sales and marketing vice-president Petri Paukkunen said: "Valmet delivers key technologies for the grade conversion to enable cost-efficient and flexible production of recyclable and sustainable packaging materials.

The contract also covers the modernisation of dryer section and calender, as well as related automation, air and chemical systems.

Valmet’s automation delivery includes Valmet DNA machine and process control, condition-monitoring and machine vision systems.

The project is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2016.

Upon completion of the upgradation, the board machine will produce folding boxboard grades in the basis weight range between 150g/m² and 500g/m². The production capacity of the machine will be approximately 400,000t annually.

The primary products to be manufactured will be a Nordic folding boxboard and recyclable barrier board for the food industry.

Kotkamills specialises in laminating paper, matt coated bulky paper and sawn products. It is 100% owned by Eagle Industries, which is owned by MB Funds, Nordic Mezzanine, Elo Mutual Pension Insurance Company, Finnish Industry Investment and company management.
