India-based Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has introduced chemical recycling technology to convert plastic waste into special circular polymers. 

The innovation aligns with the company’s commitment to reducing plastic waste and fostering a circular economy in the Asian country.

RIL’s technology has been designed to transform various types of plastic waste, including single-use and multilayered plastics, into pyrolysis oil. 

Reliance said that its integrated refining and petrochemical complex in Jamnagar, India, has achieved International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC)-Plus certification by producing circular polymers through chemically recycling plastic waste-based pyrolysis oil. 

Currently, the refinery is processing chemically recycled pyrolysis oil to produce circular polymers, CircuRepol and CircuRelene (polyethylene terephthalate/PET).  

The first shipment of ISCC-Plus-certified circular polymers has been dispatched by the company.

The ISCC-Plus certification ensures that the circular polymers’ production adheres to strict traceability and regulatory standards.  

Some of the benefits of chemical recycling include the conversion of plastic waste into high-quality materials suitable for creating new plastics.  

These materials are versatile enough to be used in packaging that requires contact with food products. 

RIL noted that the use of circular polymers also helps reduce stress on natural resources.  

The company claims it can recycle five billion post-consumer PET bottles in a year and has developed the ReRoute product for hard-to-cycle end-of-life plastics. 

By 2030, RIL has pledged to reach a total capacity of one million tonnes through all its sustainability initiatives.
