What is Environmental?

The Environmental category aims to highlight companies that are undertaking projects that reduce their impact on the natural environment or contribute to its general health. With the effects of climate change becoming ever more obvious, corporations have a responsibility to update and change their practices to prevent further damage being caused.

This category includes any projects that have led or will lead to a significant reduction in a company’s environmental impact and carbon footprint. This can include changes to materials and manufacturing, supply chain reviews; reduction in energy use or switches to renewables; recycling initiatives; and carbon offsetting. The category also includes projects that contribute to the environment such as tree planting schemes and river cleaning.

Themes

As an industry packaging is at the forefront of the war on waste, with the materials being used and their circularity the focus.

Unlike other sectors whose environmental impact is often reduced to figures about carbon emissions, the footprint of the packaging industry is highly visible and hard to ignore, with consumers witnessing the impact on a daily basis.

This combined with an increasing desire by consumer goods companies to be seen as green and responsible means that a switch from non-recyclable or otherwise environmentally damaging materials is an obvious area of focus.

Within this a key theme during the research period has been the development of new materials that are biodegradable or recyclable and require less resources to produce compared to traditional materials. In addition there are also plenty of cases of companies looking to improve existing materials through increasing recyclability and the streamlining of the production process.

As you will see from our ranking tables, alongside these developments in materials, packaging companies are also investing time and capital into reducing their carbon footprint in a more general sense, through emission reduction targets, increasing recycling and general waste reduction.
