In Bad Rappenau and Eschenbach, two important production facilities of Mondi Corrugated Packaging, certifications have been awarded according to the BRC/IoP standard. The guidelines, set forth by the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and the Institute of Packaging (IoP), establish standards for food safety in packaging.

“This highly coveted certification provides our customers with the assurance that we are manufacturing our products according to the highest international level,” states Thomas Bach, area manager, Corrugated Packaging Austria Germany. “It documents both the strong hygienic standards and the seamless quality controls enforced at our plants as well as through our company’s own in-house laboratory.”

The basis for the BRC/IoP certification is the consistent implementation of the HACCP concept (risk and hazard assessment). Through clear standards, this implementation eliminates negative influences on food safety in packaging: thus, strict access controls and shielding measures as well as comprehensive hygiene regulations must be observed. The BRC/IoP certification serves both as proof of our good manufacturing practices, and at the same time is considered an important competitive advantage among suppliers to the European food industry.

FSC certification confirms sustainable use of resources

Following Bad Rappenau (at the end of 2010), the Mondi Corrugated Packaging production site in Eschenbach was also FSC-certified. The FSC product group therefore can now bear the ‘FSC recycled’ and ‘FSC mixed’ labels. The ‘FSC recycled’ label signifies a product group that consists of 100% second-hand materials, whereas the ‘FSC mixed’ label is an indication that the products consist of a blend of FSC-certified material, second-hand material and other materials from controlled sources.

“Mondi Group clearly stands for safeguarding invaluable environmental resources, in particular those that foster sustainable forestry,” explains Thomas Bach. “The FSC label is a reliable indicator for our clients and the end customers that we conduct ourselves in a consistently responsible manner in the manufacture of our packaging.”

Recently, the corrugated packaging plants in Bystrzyca and Szczecin (Poland), and the paper factory in Tire (Turkey) obtained similar FSC certification.
