Europe’s packaging industry saw a rise of 6.3% in overall deal activity during Q4 2020, when compared to the four-quarter average, according to GlobalData’s deals database.

A total of 34 deals worth $408.25m were announced for the region during Q4 2020, against the last four-quarter average of 32 deals.

Of all the deal types, M&A saw most activity in Q4 2020 with 29, representing an 85.3% share for the region.

In second place was private equity with four deals, followed by venture financing deals with one transactions, respectively capturing an 11.8% and 2.9% share of the overall deal activity for the quarter.

In terms of value of deals, private equity was the leading category in Europe’s packaging industry with $276.38m, while M&A and venture financing deals totalled $130.62m and $1.25m, respectively.

The top three packaging deals accounted for 99.7% of the overall value during Q4 2020.

The combined value of the top five packaging deals stood at $407m, against the overall value of $408.25m recorded for the quarter.

The top five packaging industry deals of Q4 2020 tracked by GlobalData were:

1) Special Packaging Solutions Investments S.a’s $276.38m private equity deal with Guala Closures

2) The $120m acquisition of Sonoco Poland Packaging Services by Prairie Industries

3) One51 ES Plastics (UK)’s $10.62m acquisition of Coral Products (Mouldings) and Interpack
