
Packaging solutions company Amcor has announced a notable decrease in plastic consumption through its partnership with skincare brand Bulldog.
Amcor successfully reduced the weight of the company’s flexible tubes, achieving a 16.67% decrease in wall thickness.
This adjustment pertains to the 50mm-diameter flexible tubes utilised for Bulldog’s 100ml and 150ml offerings. The change is anticipated to result in savings of around 8.5 tonnes (t) of plastic each year.
The reduction was facilitated by a close collaboration between Amcor and Bulldog, concentrating on enhancing the eco-friendliness of the products.
Amcor undertook trials to ensure that the consumer experience was not compromised by the modifications.
The revamped tube reportedly maintains high standards for squeezability, print quality, and leak resistance.
Furthermore, the new tube sleeve is compatible with existing caps and shoulders, ensuring an uninterrupted filling process.
In addition to the weight reduction, Amcor has increased the proportion of post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic in the tubes to over 62%.
Amcor sales director Joe Horton said: “This latest iteration of the 100ml and 150ml flexible tubes is proof of both Bulldog’s and Amcor’s commitment to a circular society where more sustainable consumption and recycling are the norm.
“By applying our technical expertise and working together, we have found an innovative way to develop an even more sustainable packaging solution.”
Bulldog has been using sugarcane from Amcor for its virgin material since 2017, further reducing its dependence on fossil fuels.
Bulldog brand director James Barnes said: “The result of our continuing successful collaboration with Amcor is a consumer-facing product that has enhanced its sustainability credentials while still looking highly attractive.”
Earlier this month, Amcor’s AmFiber Performance Paper was verified as recyclable within Brazil’s mixed-paper recycling stream.
