Amcor Flexibles EMEA platform industrialisation engineer Eliana Atramiz said: “For anyone who likes coffee, aroma is a key indicator of quality and freshness.

“Metallised barriers preserve aroma, but their poor sustainability profile means there is a need for new solutions.”

The metal-free solution is available in two versions, AmLite that comes with a barrier comparable to metallised materials and ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) laminates and AmLite Ultra that has a special coating to protect aroma.

AmLite Ultra, which matches the barrier performance of aluminium, has a lower carbon footprint producing up to 40% less greenhouse gases at the time of coating.

The new solution comes in different packaging formats, such as soft and vacuum packs, flow packs, pouches, stick packs and single-serve capsules liddings.

With its enhanced oxygen barrier, AmLite Ultra is said to be suitable for packaging sensitive products, such as coffee.

Furthermore, for its new laminate Amcor has developed specifications that have received approval for recycling in independent tests.

The solution can be produced with fewer resources and emissions, reducing the carbon footprint of coffee packs.

AmLite can be used in capsule lids for single-serve systems.
