The four startups selected for this phase are based in the UK and the US. These companies will now progress to a more detailed assessment phase.

During the competition, various startups presented innovative solutions aimed at enhancing moisture protection in fibre-based and other compostable packaging.

Each of the shortlisted companies reportedly demonstrated a distinct approach to overcoming this challenge, despite varying stages of development.

The selected teams will now undergo a comprehensive evaluation process in collaboration with Amcor’s research and development (R&D) and corporate venturing teams.

Amcor corporate venturing and open innovation vice-president Frank Lehmann said: “We’re energised by the creativity and commitment these innovators bring to the table.

“Their ideas not only align with Amcor’s sustainability ambitions but also reflect the power of open innovation to accelerate progress across the packaging industry.

“Their technologies show strong promise in helping to meet the functional demands of moisture-sensitive applications while advancing our sustainability goals.”

The Lift-Off challenge is part of the Amcor Lift-Off Sprints programme.

Launched in 2022, Amcor Lift-Off serves as an open platform to identify and support early-stage startups focused on innovative packaging technologies.

Previous iterations of the Amcor Lift-Off programme have resulted in partnerships in areas such as nanocoatings, AI-driven waste recognition, and plant-based chemical conversion.

Recently, Amcor announced a partnership with RAUCH Yippy, an Austrian children’s drink brand, to provide its Secure Flip 26mm tamper-evident sports cap, enhancing the recyclability of the brand’s packaging.
