The Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers (APR) in North America has announced model bale specification for polypropylene containers.
Designed to reduce contamination of polypropylene, the specifications will notify materials recycling facility (MRF) operators about the amount of bale composition to be used.

APR rigids committee chairman Steve Sikra said: "The specifications are designed to inform MRF operators that bales adhering to these specifications are the most valuable to reclaimers."
According to the specifications, the amount of total contaminants in polypropylene products should not exceed 8% by weight, while the acceptable amount of metal, paper/cardboard, liquid/residues and HDPE must not exceed 2%.
The products that are meant for recycling must not contain any level of plastic bags, sheets, film, medical and hazardous waste, and products with degradable additives.
APR executive director Steve Alexander said: "The effort to expand the recycling of containers beyond PET and HDPE has evolved to the point where polypropylene PCR is rapidly approaching critical mass.
