BA Glass Group will receive a €16.5m fund from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to upgrade and expand its two container glass production facilities in Sieraków and Jedlice in western Poland.

According to the EIB, the fund is the first tranche of the total approved financing of up to €50m for the project, which is slated for completion by 2016.

The EIB promotes environmentally friendly projects and its support will contribute to strengthening the economic attractiveness and competitiveness of the Wielkopolska and Opolskie regions, while resulting in an increase in the production capacity of the plants.

At its energy efficient plants, BA Glass Group will employ new technology for the production of better-quality lighter glass containers, saving raw materials and energy in transportation. For instance, it will implement natural gas with electrical boosting for glass furnace heating.

The upgrade will allow for a substantial reduction of water consumption through increased treatment and recycling in each plant, and as well as maintaining around 640 direct jobs will also create substantial indirect employment.

The project is a continuation of the EIB’s long-term cooperation with the company, which has operations in Portugal, Spain and Poland. To date, the EIB has granted three loans to the group totalling approximately €92m to support investments in the modernisation of its industrial capacity, including the current operation.
