Black Box Wines, a US-based producer of 3l box wines, is set to introduce its cabernet sauvignon, merlot and chardonnay ranges in new 500ml Tetra Pak cartons.

The company claims that the cartons weigh less, take up less space when empty, require far less fuel when transporting and are an improvement on the already environmental-friendly 3l cartons.

The cartons are made from virgin paperboard, which can be recycled into paper products like packaging and tissue paper, and the plastic and aluminium lining can be recovered to make composite products for industrial use.

According to Black Box Wines, the packaging is light in weight, has an easily re-closeable twist-off cap and is shatterproof.

The wines in the new sleek packaging will be available in the US from October 2011.
