Developed using a circular economy approach and eco-design principles, the fibres were sourced mainly from post-consumer sources that carried “Recycled” under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) standard.

Furthermore, the SurfSHIELD water-based coating protects the tray from moisture while preserving the recyclability of the cardboard.

Cascades Fresh packaging is primarily designed for food producers and processors, especially for meat, poultry, fish, fresh fruit and vegetables.

The packaging meets Health Canada and US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements for direct food contact.

Cascades Specialty Products Group president and chief operating officer Luc Langevin: “We have always believed that eco-responsibility and performance can go hand in hand.

“This innovative product accomplishes both: it is a high-performance solution for food packaging, which at the same time helps conserve resources.

“Our goal is to pursue, along with our customers, a large-scale transformation of food packaging for the benefit of the environment.”

The thermoforming capable container complements Cascades innovative range of cardboard trays launched in 2019.

Cascades tested its rigidity to ensure compatibility with automatic unstacking, in addition to working on high-speed systems.

In June this year, Cascades launched its new range of Cascades Fresh packaging products for the fruit and vegetable industry to be used by producers, packers and retailers.

In July, the company revealed plans to shut its Etobicoke, Ontario Containerboard packaging facility.
