Coca-Cola Amatil will invest $35m to open two new blowfill lines at the company’s Thebarton production facility in Adelaide, Australia.

The investment in blowfill technology will enable the company to design and manufacture its own PET beverage bottles using fewer raw materials, and is expected to reduce the carbon footprint of the beverage containers by over 20%.

The technology has allowed the company to redesign and lightweight the entire small carbonated soft drink and water PET bottle range and will also deliver towards the company’s key environmental sustainability goals in both energy and water savings.

A portion of the savings will come from bottle redesigns that use less PET resin. Others will come from eliminating the need to transport empty bottles to bottling facilities and energy savings on the line.

The company intends to invest about $450m to install blowfill technology at all of its production facilities in Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Fiji, at a group level.
